Performance Improvement Initiative: Genitourinary Cancer Update

The purpose of this performance improvement (PI) initiative is to measure the effectiveness of the educational intervention, consisting of the full-day July 31st CME program on Genitourinary Oncology. By collecting data before and after the educational intervention, we will measure the impact of the continuing medical education on daily clinical practice. This PI initiative is designed to provide meaningful data while requiring minimal time commitment and impact on your clinical practice routine.

Clinical practice quality improvement (performance improvement) is an integral part of delivering healthcare that yields improved patient outcomes.  Clinical practice behavior can be updated through effective CME activities. Individual physician performance may be measured through point-of-care data collection. The therapeutic care of a series of similar-diagnosed patients may be followed before and after a targeted CME program. Specific practice patterns may then be analyzed with respect to specific education.

Point-of-care data analyses will be achieved using a secure mobile internet device. This performance improvement initiative includes 20 physicians collecting 10 points of data on 20 patients (10 on prostate cancer, 10 on renal cell carcinoma) three times throughout the program.

This study protocol is designed to satisfy the AMA Council on Medical Education’s rules governing how performance improvement activities are designated for CME credit.  Participants completing the entire performance improvement initiative are eligible to receive 20 AMA PRA Category 1 credits™.

This performance improvement initiative consists of three stages needed to earn 20 credits; 5 credits will be awarded for successful completion of each stage, and an additional 5 credits will be awarded for completion of all three stages.

Stage 1

Stage 2

Stage 3

Baseline data before the CME symposium on July 31st

Two weeks after the CME symposium

Once within four to five months after the CME symposium

Prior to the July 31st live CME program, physicians will use a mobile internet device at the point-of-care to enter outcomes data for 20 consecutive patients, 10 with RCC and 10 with prostate cancer.

After the CME course, physicians will collect a second set of data for 20 consecutive patients, 10 with RCC and 10 with prostate cancer.

Four to five months after the CME course, participants will collect a third set of outcomes data on 20 consecutive patients, 10 with RCC and 10 with prostate cancer.  Physicians will be able to compare outcome measures from Stage 1 to 3.

Additionally, physicians may submit clinical questions to the faculty using the mobile device in a Mentorship program. The questions and the faculty responses will be visible to all participants. Throughout the study, individually identified opportunities for targeted education will be addressed by providing further study material.
