Course Overview
Scientific Sessions and Clinical Review a 2009 is 3-day annual conference held by the University Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in Napa, California. The 2009 Scientific Sessions represent the forefront of continuing medical education and the 3rd year of this educational initiative. University of Chicago faculty will present recent scientific advances that allow us to step in front of the disease curve, and address illness in a more specific and “personalized” approach than ever before. This interactive course will highlight new approaches to the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depression, gastrointestinal disorders and cancer, and allow practical strategies to be implemented in every physician’s practice.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the latest advances in the use of biomarkers, imaging and genomics for the prevention of cardiovascular disease
- Understand managing dyslipidemia to reduce CHD risk, including the use of statins in primary prevention and long-term LDL reduction and the benefits of HDL raising therapies
- Evaluate predictors of type 2 diabetes, and how to manage cardiometabolic risk in patients with early type 2 diabetes using lifestyle intervention and pharmacotherapy
- Assess developing strategies for prevention of various cancers, including the use of vaccines and chemoprevention, and review current guidelines for cancer screening
- Examine genetic screening as a viable tool for predicting specific CVD states, cancers and diabetes
- Recognize the association of increased depressive symptoms and disorders with the worsening of chronic disease states, and identify strategies for early detection and treatment of depression
- Understand the risks and benefits of biologic therapy and chronic immune-mediated inflammatory disorders
- Review the current concepts of hospital medicine and medical informatics
Target Audience
Primary care physicians, internists, hospitalists, and program directors.
